Benjamin Britten love story plays at Spaces

The Working Theatre will present the North American premiere of British playwright Paul Godfrey's Once In a While the Odd Thing Happens, a fictional play drawn from the life of twentieth century English composer Benjamin Britten and his lover, the tenor Peter Pears. The play will run between February 5 and 28 at Spaces, located on the west side of the Flats at 2220 Superior Viaduct. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 3:00 pm.

Once In a While the Odd Thing Happens is based on the author's personal interviews with the composer's friends and family. The play explores the sexual and artistic conflict of Britten's association with the poet W. H. Auden and his eventual thirtyyear partnership with Pears. The story follows Britten's life, beginning in the 1930s, through his immigration to the United States and time spent on Fire Island, and culminates in the triumphant premiere of Britten's

opera Peter Grimes in 1945, in which the composer crafted the title role for his lover, Pears

The play's spare, poetic language reveals the composer's humanity, evoking in speech the sound world of Britten's music.

Following the premiere of Once In a While the Odd Thing Happens at the Royal National Theatre in 1990, theater critic Helen Rose noted that "the play's images linger in the mind with the pleas-

ing insistence of a beautiful melody.” John Peter in the Sunday Times of London observed the play's "lyrical, poetic prose; sinuous, swift, eloquent and dramatic." The Working Theatre's production, co-

directed by the company's artistic director, Walter E. Grodzik, and Amanda Shaffer, marks the debut of Paul Godfrey's work in North America. Tickets are priced at $10 (or $7.50 for Spaces members, students, or

seniors) and may be reserved by calling the Working Theatre at 696-9600. Remaining tickets will be on sale at the door. Free onstreet parking is available.
